Records by the Friskney Constable, Mr Henry Bushey show that Wainfleet was occupied by both Royalist and Parlimentarian forces during the Civil war, but support was for the Parliamentarians.The river crossing was of stratigic importance to both forces but in 1642 it was recorded that The Royalist forces had fortified and"watched at Solam Bridge". The

Cromwells forces defeated the Royalist forces at the nearby Battle of Winceby.It was a battle of major significance and Cromwell narrowly escaped death when his horse was shot from beneath him.
